A friend of mine has a 2005 Escalade that she bought off lease in 2007 - the truck now has about 180,000 on it, and the transmission just died. This is the latest, but most expensive, of the repairs its needed in the past year - the estimate is $4000 to fix.

She has an offer from a company that buys non running vehicles for $2300, but only has to Monday to respond.

The question is, is $2300 a reasonable offer for an 11 year old, 180k mile Escalade with a bad transmission, or could she do better elsewhere?

The Blue Book, in good running shape, is only $6000 max, and the Chevy dealer offered $1000 trade.

Well it depends on how much longer they’d bother to keep it after getting the trans replaced. If it’s blown, there aren’t going to be a lot of people who are looking to buy it, because they either A. Don’t want a car with a fucked up transmission, or B. Don’t want to pay to replace the transmission on a car they don’t know what else might go wrong with it.

So, in my opinion, I say she should take the $2300 offer.

Tell her to take it. She’s not gonna get any more for it with a fucked trans

We all know it’s YOUR Escalade, don’t hide it.

Not mine. I have done the “big old money pit Cadillac” thing before though, with the Fleetwood I had in college.

That was my thought, but I know she’s going to do whatever I tell her, so I wanted to get a second opinion. They were considering taking out a loan to get the tranny fixed, but then they’s still have an 11 year old truck with 180k and who knows what’s going to go next.

Yes, that sounds about right. I’m surprised she got that offer, the only thing I can think of is someone might have a wrecked GMT800 with a good transmission that they can swap in, and maybe flip the thing for $1200 profit or so.

exactly. and especially if they were going to take out a loan to do it... I don’t advise that at all.

That’s more than a generous offer for a 2005 Escalade with a bad transmission.

If they’re going to take a loan out, they’d be crazy to do that to fix the Escalade. Take the $2300 and use it as a down payment on something newer with less miles on it.
